What is a beach braai without a snoek on the coals? The snoek, thyrsites atun, is a long, thin mackerel species found throughout much of the southern hemisphere’s ocean, though is especially valued in South Africa as a food fish. Ocean snoek are silver flashes in the water, near apex predators, growing up to two meters in length. Freshwater snoek are typically mossy green with yellow spots.

Like Charlize Theron or Brian Habana, the Snoekie mermaid’s heartland is Benoni, Johannesburg. Strange reports of sightings all along the waterways occur especially on full-moon nights. The Snoekie is no stranger to the ocean, though, and happily joins their ‘zeesnoek’ cousins on hunts for fish, fun, and fabulous swims.

The snoekie comes in two colours, summer vine and berry blossom, and comes with a set of anal fins, upper and lower pectoral fins, and a dorsal fin. The caudal fin is minimal, for a streamlined, powerful and low-drag swimming experience, allowing the mermaid maximum freedom in the water.
